New Student Orientation
Orientation on CMU’s Main Campus
New freshman or transfer students are required to attend an on-campus orientation and advisement program prior to their first semester. Academic orientation takes place during the summer for the fall semester and in early January for the spring semester.
Scheduling an Orientation Session. Scheduling an orientation session is easy. Upon admission to Central Michigan University, detailed orientation scheduling information is e-mailed to you. Main campus students will be required to submit the $175 new student orientation fee and request an orientation date that fits your schedule.
What will new freshmen learn at orientation?
At orientation, new freshmen will:
- Meet other new students, student leaders, professors and academic advisors to learn about the university experience;
- Select and register for the first semester’s classes;
- Explore career, major and/or minor interests;
- Meet with representatives from university support offices, such as Scholarships and Financial Aid, Student Employment Services, and Residence Life.
- Tour campus. Academic buildings and office locations needed during the first year of study will be highlighted.
What will transfer students learn at orientation?
The needs of new Central Michigan University transfer students are very specific. At orientation, new transfer students will have an opportunity to have general as well as detailed questions answered. Students attending transfer orientation will:
- Register for first semester classes with the assistance of academic advisors and faculty advisors;
- Explore major, minor, and degree requirements;
- Visit with representatives from university support offices such as Scholarships and Financial Aid, Student Employment, and Residence Life.
Campus and Community Life Orientation for New Students
Immediately prior to start of the fall semester classes, new students are invited to an extensive offering of programs, special events, and informational meetings focused on students and their success in the Central Michigan University community.
Orientation for New Freshman and Transfer Students Admitted to Online or Satellite Locations
Upon admission to Central Michigan University, completion of the New Student Orientation is recommended. Orientation can be done at a CMU Center or online at http://global.cmich.edu/orientation. Many of the same topics listed above are included. Orientation will familiarize new or returning students to CMU with processes, policies, programs of study, and other helpful information for academic success. There is no fee for completing online orientation.
