Prelicensure Nursing Major, B.S.N.

B.S.N. degree

The pre-licensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program is offered through the School of Rehabilitation and Medical Sciences in The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions. The major is designed for students to obtain their BSN degree which authorizes the student to sit for the NCLEX-RN (National Council Licensure Examination-RN) to become a Registered Nurse. The BSN student learning outcomes mirror the American Association of Colleges of Nursing's (AACN) domains for entry-level nursing professionals. Nursing clinicals are patient care experiences and scheduled in each nursing semester (6) designed to expose students to a variety of healthcare settings and patient populations.

Admission Requirements, Retention & Termination Standards

Admission

New nursing cohorts begin each Spring and Fall semester or twice per year.

A percentage of each new nursing cohort will be admitted directly from high school and a percentage of the cohort will be admitted through a competitive holistic admission process. Competitive candidates will have preferential admission if all previous college credits were completed at Central Michigan University.

Minimum requirements for competitive admission to the Pre-Licensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program (BSN) will include the following:

  • Successful completion of 24 credits at a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Minimum cumulative college grade point average of 2.5.
  • Minimum cumulative college grade point average of 3.0 for science courses.

Readmission:

Once a nursing student begins the nursing course sequence, the expectation is continuation of the nursing program in the sequence until graduation.

If a student in good standing experiences an extraordinary circumstance, a written leave of absence must be requested to the Nursing Director. The leave of absence shall not be granted for a period more than one year and students who leave the program for more than one year must reapply to the program.

Retention/Progression:

For nursing classes only (not general education courses), the nursing student must repeat, at the next available opportunity, any nursing courses with a final failing grade of C-or less. There will be no more than 2 attempts at any nursing course and a maximum of 2 failing grades in nurses courses allowed.

Once admitted, the nursing student must maintain a negative drug screen and background check.

Completion:

Clinical hours are accounted for and reported. Each nursing clinical course has a prescribed number of contact hours. It is expected that students will complete all nursing clinical course hours. Certification to the Michigan Board of Nursing for taking the NCLEX requires the verification that students have met the prescribed clinical hours.

Termination:

If a student does not continue to meet retention standards, the student may be asked to withdraw from the program. The Nursing Director maintains the right to terminate a student from the program if not progressing satisfactorily.

Students unable to maintain clinical compliance will not be able to attend scheduled clinical and/or subject to dismissal from the program, unless there is a documented exception with the Nursing Director.
