Major Map

The Teaching Grades PK-3 major is designed to prepare educators to address the needs of the whole child by creating supportive, engaging learning environments grounded in relevant, research-based practices. This program equips educators with strategies to meet the diverse needs of all learners and fosters development in Literacy, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Graduates are prepared to teach students in grades PK-3 in self-contained or departmentalized classroom settings.

The Teaching Grades PK-3 major is jointly housed in the Departments of Human Development and Family Studies and Teacher and Special Education. The program integrates coursework from Teacher and Special Education, Sciences, English, Early Childhood Development and Learning, Mathematics, and Social Studies. Students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.8 to successfully complete this major.

Admission Requirements, Retention & Termination Standards

  1. A minimum cumulative average of a 2.8 must be earned in the Teaching Grades PK-3 Major.
  2. Complete EDU 107 with a B or higher.
  3. All of the following courses must be completed with a C+ or higher: EDU 330, EDU 335, EDU 342, EDU 380WI, HDF 402, HDF 403, HDF 409, SPE 250 , SPE 311, SPE 585.
  4. A minimum cumulative average of a 2.8 is required to complete the student teaching clinical experience.
  5. Students must adhere to the Teacher Candidate Dispositions set by the Education Preparation Program.
  6. Students must earn a grade of C or better in MTH 150, MTH 250, and MTH 350.

Note: 12 credit hours double count on the University Program.
