Updates and Corrections to the 18-19 Paper Bulletin

General Information:

  • Page 5 - Administration was updated.
  • Page 16 - Authorization - Ontario information was updated.
  • Page 18 - Military and Veteran's Services - a reference to the Student Service Fee was added.
  • Page 21 - Military Drop/Withdrawal Refund Policy - This paragraph was added: Military Tuition Assistance (TA) is awarded to a student under the assumption that the student will attend school for the entire period for which the assistance is awarded. When a student withdraws, the student may no longer be eligible for the full amount of TA funds originally awarded. To comply with the new Department of Defense policy, Central Michigan University will return any unearned TA funds on a prorate basis through at least the 60% portion of the period for which the funds were provided. TA funds are earned proportionally during an enrollment period, with unearned funds returned based upon when a student stops attending.

  • Page 104 - Master of Entrepreneurial Transactions - Accelerated admissions are now added.
  • Page 107 - Master of Science in Exercise Physiology - The admission deadline is April 1 only.
  • Page 107 - Master of Public Health now has a concentration name: Master of Public Health: Public Health Practice Concentration.
  • Page 108 - Master of Public Health - Item 4 of the Admissions requirements was changed to: 4. Statement of Purpose. A personal statement (1-2 pages) describing your reasons for pursuing a graduate degree in public health at Central Michigan University. The statement should include information about your future career plans, or any past or current activities or achievements which are related to your proposed field of specialization including any research or teaching experience you may have had.
  • Page 120 - Master of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics - Option D was put on hiatus.
  • Page 113 – Master of Arts in History – Admissions section – Statement of Purpose requirement added for students who are seeking funding.
  • Page 115 – Joint Master of Arts in History – Admissions section – Statement of Purpose requirement added.
  • Page 115 – Joint Ph.D. in History – Admissions section – Item 4.a. revised regarding Statement of Purpose requirement.
  • Page 130 - Master of Music - Statement of Purpose now required for admission.
  • Page 157 - MSA: Health Services Administration Concentration - Electives - HSC 552 has changed to an undergrad course, HSC 454, so will not be available as an elective on this program.
  • Page 162 - MSA: Health Services Administration Certificate - Electives - HSC 552 has changed to an undergrad course, HSC 454, so will not be available as an elective on this program.
  • Page 166 - MA in Cultural Resource Management - Electives - HST 512 was changed to HST 303, and will not be available as an elective on this program as it is an undergraduate level course now.
  • MSA: Health Services Administration - Under Required Courses, the note should say "...one of HSC 507 or HSL 611..." (not HSC 611).
  • Page 143 - Ph.D. in School Psychology - Under Program Requirements, the word "years" was left out of the sentence: "Students are required to complete at least two (2) years of academic training at Central Michigan University."

The following course changes were made as of Spring, 2019, after the Bulletin went to publication:

  • BIO 523 has a new title, hours, description, and prerequisites: BIO 523 Ecology and Systematics of Freshwater Algae 3(2-3) - Examination of the systematics and ecology of freshwater algae using a systems approach to identify native assemblages in wetlands, streams, lakes, and the Great Lakes. Prerequisites: BIO 212, 213 both with a C- or better; or BIO 218; or admission to the Biology M.S., Conservation Biology M.S., or Earth and Ecosystem Sciences Ph.D. program.
  • BIO 536 has new description and prerequisites: Study of cells and tissues that comprise human organ systems with emphasis on their integration and function using light microscopy. Prerequisites: BIO 212, 213 both with a C- or better; or BIO 390 or 392; or admission to the Biology M.S., Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology M.S., Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology Ph.D. program, or Earth and Ecosystem Sciences Ph.D. program.
  • BIO 575 has new prerequisites: Prerequisites: BIO 212, 213 with a C- or better; or graduate standing in a Master’s or Ph. D. program in the College of Science and Engineering.
  • ECO 616 has new prerequisites: Prerequisites: Graduate standing in Economics. Recommended: Multivariate calculus and intermediate microeconomic theory.
  • ECO 620 has a new description and prerequisites: Advanced analysis of the macroeconomic phenomena in light of Classical, Keynesian, New Classical (stochastic dynamic general equilibrium), New Keynesian and Agent-based models. Prerequisite: Graduate standing in economics. Recommended: Knowledge of intermediate macro and micro theory and time series econometrics.
  • EDL 696 has new hours, description: EDL 696 Higher Education Practicum 1-9(Spec) - A planned learning experience gained through first-hand observations and operational responsibilities under the direct supervision of a practicing higher education leader. This course may be offered in an online or hybrid format. CR/NC only. Prerequisites: Regular admission to the MA in Higher Education Administration program in the Department of Educational Leadership. Completion of at least 9 core credits in the program. Approval of practicum application.
  • EDL 697 has new hours: EDL 697 College Teaching Internship 1-6(Spec)
  • EDU 590 has new title, hours, remove cross listing with SPE 510, description, prerequisites: EDU 590 Foundations for Learning, Design, and Technology in Education 3(3-0) - Integration of technology in classroom instruction and management, with emphasis upon lesson design and evaluation of software, applications, and devices. This course may be offered in an online format. Prerequisites: EDU 290, junior standing; or graduate status.
  • EDU 595 has new title, hours, description, and prerequisites: EDU 595 Digital and Media Literacy for Educators 3(3-0) - The study of digital and media literacy research, theory, and practice focused specifically for those who are instructors in K-12 and higher education. This course may be offered in an online format. Prerequisites: EDU 290, junior standing; or graduate status.
  • EDU 642 has new title, description, prerequisites: EDU 642 Creating Instructional Media 3(3-0) - Creation, evaluation, and implementation of multimedia technologies in classroom environments. Special attention is given to the theoretical and pedagogical principles underlying the use of multimedia. This course may be offered in an online format. Prerequisites: EDU 590 or graduate status.
  • EDU 653 has new title, hours, description, and prerequisites: EDU 653 Higher Order Web-Mediated Learning 3(3-0) - Study of emerging Web technologies and practical skills for using the Web to creatively construct and communicate knowledge about educational topics. This course may be offered in an online format. Prerequisites: EDU 590 or graduate status.
  • EDU 707 has new title, description, prerequisites: EDU 707 Issues in Learning, Design, and Technology 3(3-0) - Selected issues relative to new learning technologies in online and blended learning spaces. Emphasis upon the learning theory which supports applied technologies. This course may be offered in an online format. Prerequisite: EDU 590 or graduate status.
  • HST 603 has a new description: An investigation of historians’ interpretations and methodologies on the major topics and themes in American history from 1865 to the present. Repeatable up to 6 hours when content does not duplicate previous topics. Recommended: Admission to one of the graduate programs in history. HST 690 has new description and prerequisites: Focused readings on a special topic to be arranged with the instructor. Prerequisites: Admission to the History graduate program; consent of the instructor and the History Department's Director of Graduate Studies.
  • HST 700 has new hours and description: HST 700 Practicum in College Teaching 3(3-0) - This course explores the scholarship on pedagogy, theories of learning, and course conceptualization to train graduate students how to teach history at the college level. Recommended: Admission to one of the History Department’s graduate programs.
  • HST 890 has new description and prerequisites: Focused readings on a special topic to be arranged with the instructor. Prerequisites: Admission to the History doctoral program; consent of the instructor and the History Department’s Director of Graduate Studies.
  • MTH 645 has a new title, description, and prerequisites: MTH 645 Algebraic Topology 3(3-0) - Homotopy and the fundamental group. Free products, van Kampen's theorem, covering spaces, universal covers, and deck transformations. Homology, cohomology, exact sequences, and higher homotopy groups. Prerequisites: MTH 545, 623.
  • MTH 641 has changed to MTH 744 and has new hours, description and prerequisite: MTH 744 Topics in Geometry 3-9(Spec) - Advanced topics in the area of geometry tht are not covered in regularly offered courses. To be taken as a 3-credit course and may be repeated for a maximum of 9 credit hours. Prerequisites: MTH 341, permission of instructor. Recommended: MTH 533, 645.
  • PHY 578 has new hours and description: PHY 578 Experimental Physics 3(1-5) - Selected experiments utilizing the techniques of modern experimental physics. Writing Intensive. Prerequisites: PHY 277, PHY 322 or graduate standing in Physics. Pre/Co-requisites: PHY 332 or graduate standing in Physics. (Summer 2019)
  • SPE 510 is no longer cross-listed with EDU 590, description is changed: Students will study and practice the integration of technology in classroom instruction and management, with emphasis upon software evaluation and lesson design. This course is approved for offering in a distance learning format. Prerequisite: EDU 290 or graduate status.
  • New Courses (Spring 2019): CHM 514, 515, 556, 560, 569, EDL 611, 793; MSA 623, 627.
