Postgraduate School Counseling, Graduate Certificate

This is a 15-credit hour postgraduate certificate that provides a pathway for individuals with a master's degree in counseling from a regionally accredited college or university to become licensed school counselors within the state.

Admission Requirements, Retention & Termination Standards

Admissions Requirements

  • A master's degree in counseling from a CACREP-accredited counseling program. Individuals with an earned master's degree in counseling from a non-CACREP-accredited program are encouraged to apply but may have to take additional coursework. Please contact the school counseling program director for an assessment of additional course requirements.
  • A two-page double-spaced APA style Statement of Purpose explaining why the applicant wants to be a school counselor and how they will help young people in grades K-12.
  • A letter of recommendation from an employer or former counseling instructor.
  • Official transcripts.

Retention Standards

  •  Certificate students must maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Termination Standards

  •  Certificate students should familiarize themselves with the Student Handbook available through the counseling program and must abide by the same standards and norms as all students enrolled in the counseling program.
  • Students whose behavior falls outside of the standards and norms as described in the Student Handbook may be subject to a remediation plan and possible termination from the certificate program.
